Editor's Note

Three places. A reason to linger.

A trip takes shape around small decisions: the view from your room, the table you reserve, the morning you leave open. These three stories start with a coastline and a real place to stay, then make room for the world beyond the resort.

Explore a cliffside retreat in Los Cabos, the lagoons of Mayakoba, and the jungle-framed shore of Banderas Bay. Each feature includes official resort and restaurant links to help you plan your own stay.

Three coastlines. Your kind of escape.

Choose a destination and read its story below, from the room to the dinner table and a little farther afield.

01 / Los Cabos · Baja California Sur

A stay between cliff and sea

A mountain tunnel, a Pacific outlook, and a dinner tucked into the cliffs. Find a coastal rhythm at Pedregal.

The stay
Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal

Coastal illustration, an evocation of the destination.

The stay

A private tunnel leads through the mountain to Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal, where rock and the Pacific frame the resort. Rooms and suites sit alongside casitas, villas and private homes, giving couples and larger groups different ways to settle into the landscape. Compare the position and outdoor space of each accommodation as carefully as its floor plan. Here, the setting is a central part of the stay.

The table

At El Farallón, the coast shapes both the view and the meal. The restaurant sits against the cliffs above the water, with seafood built around the daily catch. Fish displayed on ice and weighed to order connect dinner to the market. The Champagne Terrace offers another reason to arrive early. Check the current menu when reserving, since the catch varies with availability.

Beyond the resort

For a different perspective, take a boat outing to El Arco at Land’s End. Departures from Cabo San Lucas Marina and Médano Beach put the granite landmark within reach. Leave room for the weather and the water to set the pace.

02 / Riviera Maya · Quintana Roo

The lagoon side of the coast

Mangrove waterways, a Caribbean shoreline, and a table beside the lagoon. There is more than one horizon at Mayakoba.

Illustrated tropical resort beside turquoise water

The stay
Rosewood Mayakoba

Coastal illustration, an evocation of the destination.

The stay

Rosewood Mayakoba gives the Riviera Maya more than one horizon. Suites and villas occupy settings beside lagoons, within tropical greenery and along the beach. That variety makes choosing a room part of planning the experience. Lagoon accommodation looks toward winding waterways and mangroves, while beachfront options bring the sand into the foreground. Think about where you want the day to begin, then choose the setting that suits your pace.

The table

Casa del Lago changes character across the day. Breakfast draws on central Mexican traditions, with chilaquiles and huevos rancheros among the offerings. Dinner turns toward Italy, with antipasti, handmade pasta and steaks beside the lagoon. It makes a natural anchor for an unhurried evening after a day outdoors. Visitors staying elsewhere can also book dinner, with reservations required for guests who are not registered at the resort.

Beyond the resort

Within the wider Mayakoba community, El Pueblito offers a change of scene. Its plaza brings together boutiques, a chapel and places to eat, including the Mexican bakery Pan Dulce. Browse crafts or stop for something sweet before returning to the water.

03 / Puerto Vallarta · Banderas Bay

Where the jungle meets the bay

A south-shore base with forest behind it and Banderas Bay ahead. Add a long dinner and an evening along the Malecón.

The stay
Garza Blanca Preserve Resort & Spa

Coastal illustration, an evocation of the destination.

The stay

On Puerto Vallarta’s south shore, Garza Blanca Preserve Resort & Spa sits between the Sierra Madre jungle and Banderas Bay. Wooded hills behind the resort and water ahead give the setting its character. Accommodation includes oceanfront rooms and suites, panoramic suites and larger penthouses. Compare individual categories to find the balance of space and outlook that works for your trip. A base south of downtown leaves room for both days by the bay and outings into the city.

The table

Blanca Blue keeps Mexico at the center of the menu. Its contemporary approach draws on regional cooking, including influences from Oaxaca and the Yucatán, in a dining room with ocean views. That breadth gives dinner a different emphasis from a simple beachside seafood stop. Make it the evening’s main event, with time to study the current menu and enjoy the setting.

Beyond the resort

Head into town for the Malecón, where the waterfront promenade doubles as an outdoor sculpture gallery. Look for Rafael Zamarripa’s The Boy on the Seahorse, then continue along the water at your own pace. The public art adds another layer to a destination often introduced through its beaches.

The Standard

Four things to look for.

1

The view must be the lobby

You should see the reason you flew before you've signed anything. If the vista is a bonus, it isn't a destination.

2

One table that matters

Look for a restaurant that gives the place a voice, with a menu that draws on its coast, region or city. Reserve directly before you travel.

3

Quiet on demand

A place to be still without booking it. The deck corner, the garden end, the hour the pool empties. Luxury is choosing.

4

The last morning test

Choose a stay with enough variety to make the final morning as inviting as the first, whether that means a quiet terrace or breakfast beside the water.

The Resort Diary

Seven days, day by day

An illustrative seven-day itinerary. Adapt the pace and activities to your chosen resort, the season and local conditions.

Day One

The long stair

Arrival is an event, not a transfer. Shoes off by the first glass, map of the coast on the table, and the first swim before the light goes.

Day Two

The slow morning

Breakfast with the sea doing nothing, which is the point. Afternoon for the deck, and the first dinner at the table that matters.

Day Three

The excursion

One morning in the world beyond the cliff, the harbor, the local market, the one restaurant the staff won't stop talking about.

Day Four

The rest day

No plans, on purpose. The spa's long hour, the cold plunge, and a book you finally read because there's nowhere else to be.

Day Five

The deep water day

The reef, the boat, the long lunch that ends at sea. The day the trip stops feeling like a trip.

Day Six

The farewell table

One last long dinner, the good bottles out, and the conversation that happens when the light does the talking.

Day Seven

The last morning

Breakfast that still feels like the best part. The stair down, the car, and the quiet knowing that this is the one you'll describe badly.
